DISCERNMENT
1 Kings 3:9 “So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”
The Scene: Discerning heart–see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil.
Matthew 13:13,15-17 ” This is why I speak to them in parables: ‘Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them. But blessed are your eyes because they see and your ears because they hear. For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and hear what you hear but did not hear it.'”
Observation is an important part of discernment–observing the actions of others tells us a lot about their values and hearts.
Philippians 1:10-11 “So that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ– to the glory and praise of God.”
Psalm 85:8 ” I will listen to what the Lord God will say; he promises peace to his people, his saints–but let them not return to folly.”
God expects His people who have been given His Holy Spirit to discern the spirits and understand good from evil. We must learn to use the tools He has given us.
